Why music?
Music is more than just a hobby. It is a way to express emotions and things that cannot be said with words. It has been used throughout time to bring people together, tell history, and a way to communicate in general. It is impossible to escape music in today's technological world. It is an ageless expression used daily.
Studies have proven time and time again that learning music improves executive function in both adults and children. Executive function is the function in our brains that allow people to:
If your student does not want to pursue a professional music career, there are plenty of reasons to continue music. Some colleges provide scholarships for students who are not in the music field but join the community band. Music can also help form bonds and relationships that can last a lifetime through simple events such as a concert or band camp. You do not have to keep up with music forever, but it could be a fun thing to try.
For anyone who has someone interested in music, listening to music helps ease stress and tension in the body. It may take some practice, but the student in music can eventually help relax you with their practicing. It will be worth it in the end.
It's fun! Music can be extremely fun and give a sense of accomplishment at the end of all the hard work put into it. I suggest everyone learns how to play at least one instrument in their lifetime just to experience it.
At the end of the day, everyone should have the opportunity to learn music and enjoy it. No one needs to be perfect. My ultimate goal in teaching is to help my students feel the joy of creating live music. Listening to music is not the same as making music with your own two hands.
